Brisbane Lions approve Chris Fagan's return to AFL coaching

Lions given green light despite investigation

Cameron Bruce appointed Assistant Coach - Midfield

The Brisbane Lions have approved Chris Fagan's return to AFL coaching, despite the ongoing investigation into his role in the Hawthorn racism scandal.

Fagan, who stepped down as Lions coach in September after 10 seasons at the helm, will return to the club in a part-time capacity, assisting new coach Cameron Bruce with the midfield group.

The Lions made the decision after receiving legal advice and conducting their own internal investigation, which found that there was no evidence to suggest that Fagan had engaged in any wrongdoing.

"We have taken the time to thoroughly consider all of the information available to us," Lions chairman Andrew Wellington said.

"We have spoken to Chris at length, and we are satisfied that he has not engaged in any wrongdoing.

"We believe that Chris can make a valuable contribution to our football program, and we are pleased to welcome him back to the club."

Fagan said he was "grateful" for the opportunity to return to the Lions.

"I am committed to helping the club achieve its goals, and I am confident that I can make a positive contribution," he said.

The Lions' decision to approve Fagan's return has been met with mixed reactions.

Some have praised the club for standing by Fagan, while others have questioned the wisdom of bringing him back given the ongoing investigation.

The AFL is currently investigating allegations that Fagan was involved in racist behavior during his time at Hawthorn.

The investigation is expected to be completed in the coming months.

In the meantime, the Lions will be hoping that Fagan's return can help them improve on their disappointing 2022 season, in which they finished 12th on the ladder.
