Historical Context

The US has a complex stance on the Taiwan issue. On the one hand, it has a long-standing commitment to the "One China" policy, which recognizes the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China. On the other hand, the US has also been a strong supporter of Taiwan's security and democracy.

The Future of Taiwan

The future of Taiwan is uncertain. The PRC has repeatedly stated its intention to unify Taiwan with the mainland, by force if necessary. However, Taiwan has its own strong national identity and a majority of its people support maintaining the status quo.
